“Values are not what humanity is, but what humanity ought to be”.
I have already analyzed 2019 Essay paper. Click here for same. This post mentions an ideal structure for Essay Topic mentioned above. This is a philosophical essay topic and can be tough to handle. However, you can handle it well in following way:
- Write a multi-dimensional essay.
- Include points from GS.
- Include points from current.
- Include keywords and quotes from Ethics.
- Focus on breaking down the monotony by
- Drawing diagrams.
- Make headings.
- Write in mix of para-points-bullets wherever possible.
Structure
Introduction: Define values. This can be easily done from Ethics/GS-4 content. Define humanity. Write 2-3 lines on Values being idealistic while humanity being realistic. In all, introduction should not be more than 1 paragraph. If you are writing a story, then ensure that it is crisp and relevant to the topic.
Historical Aspect: 2nd paragraph should deal with historical view on topic. Make sure that this paragraph is strictly not more than 40-50 words. You can write from Mahabharat, Gita, Ramayan or quote learnings from lives of Indian/Western thinkers/philosophers/leaders.
By the end of 1st page or max by start of 2nd page, you must hit the topic. Don’t make the examiner wait too much for essay body.
This topic can be dealt with in following Approaches:
- Socio-Eco-Pol-Env-World dimensions and sub-dimensions like:
- Sociological Sub-Dimensions: Values like social values, gender equality, justice, fairness etc.
- Economic Sub-Dimensions: Values like economic values, wage equality, equality of opportunity, inclusive growth as a value, business values etc.
- Political Sub-Dimensions: Values like political attitudes, politics with ethics (Gandhi’s 7 sins), probity in governance, accountability, transparency etc.
- Environmental Values: Civic values, trusteeship value, value of stewardship etc.
- World Sub-Dimensions: Universal values, national values etc.
Then, these dimensions and sub-dimensions have to be linked with the topic. With every sub-dimension you have to mention characteristics of particular value/humanity and link particular value with how humanity ought to showcase it.
For example, under Economic Dimension – Business value sub-dimension, write:
“Business values teach one to uphold not only economic principles but also to take care of society at large via corporate social responsibility. But right now, CSR is not doing well in India because of vested interests of companies and their heads. Hence, business value is not about individual human but larger humanity and humanity ought to uphold business values”.
Likewise, other dimensions should be linked. This approach can be tough to handle and also might appear ‘forced’ at times.
2. Second approach is simplistic. Just write different values, mention how this ‘idealistic value’ is not what ‘realistic humanity’ is right now and how humanity ought to be by adopting the value in letter and spirit.
In the attached picture you can see 25 different values. Pick one value after other and link it with the topic. Problem with this approach is that flow will be very very tough to manage. Ensure that values of a kind are dealt with together (like done in 1st approach)
For example, Religious values like speaking truth, non-stealing, non-possession, non-violence etc are not what humanity is today. Rather, humanity is misusing religion for vested interests and perpetrating hatred and separatism. Humanity ought to adopt what Religious values truly prescribe. Hence, values are not what humanity is but what it ought to be!
Similarly, other values have to be addressed.
